The Eastern Cape of South Africa is home to the beautiful Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve, a 500-hectare oasis located just off the N2, 35 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth. The reserve is a must-see for nature enthusiasts and those who appreciate the splendor of the Eastern Cape’s floral kingdom.
One of the best spots to see flowering proteas in season, as well as other indigenous fynbos, Van Stadens reserve is home to an incredible variety of plant species, bird and animal life. The reserve has been in existence since 1951 and its main aim is to protect and propagate unique indigenous flora of the area.
The reserve stretches between Van Stadens Mountain and the coast, presenting visitors with a diverse terrain of indigenous coastal forest, a large plateau, the Van Stadens River that runs through the gorge, river bank vegetation and a variety of flora other than proteas, like succulents, ericas, and leucadendrons.
One of the highlights of the reserve is the Van Stadens bridge, a concrete arch bridge over the Van Stadens River on the N2. Visitors can take in a great view of the bridge from one of the lookout points. Another reason locals head to the reserve is for birding, as up to 170 different bird species have been spotted. The rocky gorge in particular provides great sightings of local raptors like the forest buzzard, jack buzzard and African crowned eagle.
