Ficksburg, the second most important town in the Eastern Free State region of South Africa, is a destination rich in natural beauty and cultural history. This picturesque town is known for its agricultural abundance, with crops such as corn and asparagus grown in the surrounding area.

However, the highlight of Ficksburg’s annual crop is the harvesting of cherries on the many cherry farms that surround the town, taking place from October to December.

Every November, Ficksburg hosts the Cherry Festival, a three-day event that attracts up to 30,000 visitors. The festival offers a range of family-friendly shows and activities such as sheep herding, horse and camel rides, helicopter flips, and steam train rides at the Sandstone Estate. Tourists can also take guided tours of the town to admire the local sandstone architecture and explore the surrounding countryside. For those looking for a more adventurous experience, airplane trips to the scenic Katse Dam in Lesotho are also available.

For accommodations, Ficksburg offers a variety of guesthouses and B&Bs, as well as an exclusive 3-star hotel that features a French-style restaurant with an a la carte menu. The town also boasts a range of commercial food outlets, including KFC and Wimpy, as well as various restaurants and cafes for meals, such as Die Blikkantien at Die Blikplek, a charming Ficksburg venue.

Beyond the cherry and asparagus farms, the region also produces other fruits such as peaches, apricots, and apples, and is home to a thriving livestock industry with many dairy farms in the surrounding countryside. Ficksburg is an ideal place to experience South Africa’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, making it an attractive tourism spot for visitors.
