Umtata

Umtata (also known as Mthatha) is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is the capital of the O.R. Tambo District Municipality and the seat of the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality. Umtata is located in the former Transkei region of South Africa, which was a bantustan (homeland) set aside for the Xhosa people during the apartheid era. The town is named after the nearby Umtata River, which means “place of the gnashing teeth” in Xhosa. Umtata is an important transportation hub, with road and rail connections to other parts of South Africa. It is also a center of education and healthcare, with several hospitals and universities located in the area.
