Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Manyoni Private Game Reserve, previously known as the Zululand Rhino Reserve, is located in the heart of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. With its name meaning “place of birds” in isiZulu, this 23,000 hectare reserve provides a unique habitat for a wide variety of animal species, including black and white rhinoceroses, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, nyalas, blue wildebeests, warthogs, impalas, kudus, and other smaller antelopes. Rare species found in the reserve include hyaenas, sunis, and leopards.

The Manyoni Private Game Reserve was created in 1995 through a strategic partnership between the World Wildlife Fund, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and property owners, with the goal of providing a safe haven for the rapidly declining black rhino population. The black rhino is one of the 10 most endangered mammals in the world, and the reserve has been declared an international site of ecological significance for its efforts in protecting the species.

In addition to preserving a unique habitat for animals, the Manyoni Private Game Reserve is also a part of the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, aimed at increasing the land available for black rhino conservation and stimulating rapid population growth. The project is crucial, as the black rhino population suffered a catastrophic loss in the 1970s and 1980s, wiping out 96% of Africa’s wild black rhino population in just 20 years. Thanks to the efforts of organizations like Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the black rhino population has slowly increased to around 3600.
