Karkloof Conservancy

Nestled high in the Natal Midlands, the Karkloof Conservancy is a breathtaking expanse of land spanning 40,000 hectares. This remarkable area is composed of wetlands, grasslands, and natural forests, providing a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife, including all three of South Africa’s endangered crane species.

Legend has it that the conservancy derives its name from an upturned ox-wagon, which once served as a distinctive landmark along the prominent route connecting Natal to the former Transvaal (Gauteng). Today, the Karkloof Conservancy stands as a testament to the dedication and vision of a group of local farmers, foresters, and landowners who have banded together to protect and preserve this precious biodiversity hotspot.

Situated a mere forty-five minutes from Nottingham Road, the Karkloof Conservancy boasts a multitude of community-driven initiatives aimed at safeguarding the region’s natural treasures. These projects encompass vital activities such as bird counts, game counts, invasive plant control, and comprehensive land care programs. Through their concerted efforts, the conservancy ensures that environmentally friendly farming practices are followed, invasive plant species are curbed, and the quality of soil and vegetation is maintained.

Embracing sustainable agricultural techniques, farmers within the Karkloof Conservancy embrace the concept of no-till cropping for maize, minimizing soil disturbance and preserving its fertility. Furthermore, they promote biodiversity within agriculture by establishing corridors of natural habitat that facilitate the free movement of animals and plants, fostering a harmonious coexistence between agricultural activities and the surrounding ecosystem.

Serving as the heart of the conservancy, the conservation center stands as a hub of knowledge and a bastion of environmental education. Located at the entrance of Gartmore Farm, approximately 15 kilometers north of Howick, this center is dedicated to spreading the message of conservation in the Karkloof. Visitors can explore the fascinating exhibits and learn about the delicate balance of nature that the conservancy strives to protect. Additionally, the center features two bird hides—one at Gartmore Farm and the other at the neighboring Loskop Farm—offering bird enthusiasts the chance to witness the awe-inspiring sight of the blue, crowned, and wattled cranes. These elegant creatures are just a few among the 180 species of birds that grace the region with their presence throughout the year.

For an immersive experience, knowledgeable bird guides are available to accompany visitors on guided walks, providing invaluable insights into the rich avian life of the area. These experts also take it upon themselves to engage with local farm schools, educating and inspiring children about the importance of environmental stewardship.
