Birds Of Eden Bird Sanctuary

Nestled just a few kilometers east of the picturesque town of Plettenberg Bay in South Africa’s Garden Route lies a haven for avian enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Birds of Eden Bird Sanctuary, home to over 2000 previously caged birds, offers an extraordinary experience that combines the freedom of flight with the preservation of endangered species.

Standing as the world’s largest single span aviary, Birds of Eden boasts a remarkable two-hectare dome spanning a lush gorge adorned with indigenous forests. This remarkable structure envelopes visitors in a literal paradise, where they can witness the beauty of approximately 100 captivating South African bird species, some of which are endangered. It’s a sanctuary that not only allows birds to soar freely but also serves as a testament to the conservation efforts dedicated to their preservation.

As you embark on your journey through Birds of Eden, prepare to be amazed by the variety of sights and sounds that envelop you. A 1.2-kilometer wooden walkway guides you through this stunning sanctuary, providing a serene path that meanders over a flowing river and even takes you behind a captivating waterfall—a part of the sanctuary’s intriguing ruins. Unlike Monkey Valley, here you can explore independently, without the need for a guide, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the enchanting surroundings.

Imitating the natural wonders of the outdoors, Birds of Eden’s dome occasionally replicates the awe-inspiring power of thunderstorms. With the assistance of an innovative irrigation system, the sanctuary recreates claps of thunder and refreshing cloudbursts, transporting you to the heart of nature’s most exhilarating moments.

Behind the creation of this extraordinary bird sanctuary are the same visionaries who brought Monkeyland, a popular primate sanctuary located nearby. By combining these two attractions, visitors have the opportunity to embark on a seamless two-in-one day trip, making the most of their time in this captivating region. The creators of Birds of Eden have gone above and beyond, providing a safe haven not only for birds and miniature monkeys but also for rehabilitated pet birds, further showcasing their commitment to animal welfare.

While Birds of Eden offers a range of impressive features, it’s the overwhelming experience of being immersed in the wild, surrounded by hundreds of birds as they gracefully soar, fly, and sing, that truly defines the essence of this sanctuary. Prepare to have your senses awakened and your spirit lifted as you witness these magnificent creatures in their natural element.

Beyond the awe-inspiring birdlife, Birds of Eden offers additional attractions that further enhance your visit. The sanctuary boasts seven picturesque dams, with the largest featuring a floating bridge adorned with comfortable seating. Here, you can relax and savor light meals while basking in the tranquility of the surroundings. For those seeking a touch of cultural immersion, the park features a 200-seater amphitheater secluded within the forest. This serene spot allows visitors to revel in the symphony of bird calls while surrounded by the beauty of nature.

To top it all off, Birds of Eden presents a breathtaking canopy walk that takes you on an elevated journey through the treetops, providing a unique perspective of the sanctuary and its feathered inhabitants. As you traverse this elevated pathway, you’ll feel a profound connection with the birds, gaining a deeper appreciation for their natural behaviors and habitats.
